About The Way of the Road – Japan

Japan is precision, rhythm and contrast. The Way of the Road is a 16-day motorcycle journey through mountain passes, coastal highways and cultural landmarks, blending legendary riding roads with deep historical immersion.

The adventure begins in Kyoto before heading west toward Himeji and the Setouchi region, where feudal castles and canal towns set the tone. From there, we cross to Shikoku and climb into elevated ridgelines, flowing through sweeping mountain curves before reaching the bridges and island networks of the Shimanami Kaido.

A balance of riding and reflection defines this tour. In Hiroshima, history takes centre stage. Along the Sea of Japan, coastal roads lead to vast sand dunes and dramatic shoreline scenery. Inland, quiet countryside transitions into the Japanese Alps, where high-altitude roads such as the Venus Line deliver smooth, panoramic riding through open highlands.

Further south, the Pacific coastline unfolds through Hakone and the Izu Peninsula — a region of dynamic curves, ocean views and volcanic landscapes. Traditional post towns, Zen temples and hot spring resorts punctuate the route, offering cultural depth beyond the saddle.

Road quality throughout Japan is exceptional. Mountain passes are technical but predictable, coastal stretches are flowing and well surfaced, and traffic discipline is among the best in the world. This tour is engaging without being extreme — suited to confident riders who enjoy precision cornering and varied terrain.

Accommodation ranges from modern hotels to traditional ryokan, with regular opportunities to unwind in natural hot springs. Cuisine is regional, seasonal and integral to the experience.

The Way of the Road is not just about distance covered — it is about understanding Japan through movement. From alpine ridgelines to seaside horizons, from ancient shrines to modern skylines, this journey reveals a country where tradition and innovation share the same road.
